Join us for an evening with illustrator, author and picture book maker Sydney Smith as he talks with us about drawing for others, the development to making his own books and the importance of observational drawing for his illustration practice.
Sydney Smith is a picture book maker from Nova Scotia. Since graduating from NSCAD University, he has worked on many books, including Town Is by the Sea, winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal, and Footpath Flowers, which was a New York Times Children’s Book of the Year and winner of the Governor General Award for Illustration. Soon, his latest book Do You Remember will be released by Neal Porter Books. A beautifully moving book, in which Sydney meditates on the concept of memories, Do You Remember is told from the perspectives of a mother and son who revisit shared memories and make a new one as they enter a new chapter of their lives.
Sydney is a true all-rounder. He manages to impress deeply with his conscientious attitude to the craft of drawing. He seems wholeheartedly committed to maintaining his craft/mastery and is never not evolving in his skills. The research he did on capturing light reflecting on water for his book Town is by the Sea is peerless.
Sydney will take us through his process and talk about how drawing from observation plays a role in keeping his images lively.
As usual, there will be plenty of time for Q&A after the talk. We would love to hear from you!
/// Please note: All ticket buyers will be sent access to a full recording of the talk and Q&A, which will be available for four days after the event. You will receive an email with a link for this a day later. Please email us especially if you have not received it after 24 hours!
